Illinois City Council Terminates Vending Contract Over Healthy Snacks

Feb. 20, 2019

In Pontiac, IL, the city council voted at its Monday night meeting to terminate the vending contract with ME Treats because of contention around stocking better-for-you snacks, according to Pontiac Daily Leader.

The Pontiac Parks and Recreation director had asked for the vending machine at the recreation center to be filled with more nutritious snacks. However, ME Treats responded that healthier snacks do not sell as well and would adversely affect sales, according to the article.

Pontiac’s council voted to terminate the contract starting April 30 and instead offer snacks in-house using another method, such as a refrigerator stocked by staff.

The Parks and Recreation department was getting a 22 percent commission on the vending machine sales.
