The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) recently provided an official update regarding its progress on meaningful access to U.S. Currency for Blind and Visually Impaired Individuals.
Of specific importance to our industry was the Bureau’s announcement that it project the initial circulation of redesigned currency with a tactile feature to be the $10 Federal Reserve note. The new note will begin its circulation in 2020.
Other key parts of the update include notice that in addition to the raised tactile feature, the BEP will continue to include large, high-contrast numerals similar to the $5 note issued in 2008 to help the visually impaired better denominate U.S. currency.
NAMA’s President and CEO Carla Balakgie and Senior Vice President Eric Dell recently met with the director and senior level staff of the BEP to thank them for their work with our industry and update them on the potential impact currency changes could have on our industry.
“We commend the BEP on their efforts to work hand-in-hand with NAMA as they move forward with U.S. currency updates,” said Dell, in a prepared statement.
