AI-powered ‘cashierless’ market popped up at the Indianapolis 500

Unattended retail startup AiFi partnered with Verizon Business to bring an AI-powered, 5G self-checkout store to the latest Indianapolis 500 race. The Indy Express Shop NanoStore allowed ticket holders, staff, drivers and volunteers to purchase packaged snacks, beverages and merchandise without a cashier.

The 105th Indianapolis 500 took place on Sunday, May 30. Indy fans were able to enter and use the NanoStore by scanning the Indy Express Shop app. Once scanned, the computer vision-technology around the store observed and tracked the items that a customer chose. When customers were done shopping, they walked out and received a receipt sent to their app or email.

AiFi's NanoStores are fully autonomous, customizable and can be placed in any location where Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband network is available. Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband is available in parts of more than 70 cities.

AiFi said its computer vision-technology has achieved an accuracy rate of 99%, without using facial recognition or storing biometric data. The company has more than 15 stores deployed worldwide.
