Illinois High School Adds Locked Coolers To Student Lounge

Jan. 23, 2017

Barrington High School in Barrington, IL has added credit-card enabled coolers to meet demand for food and beverage options after school, reports the Daily Herald. The so called "vending machines" in the student lounge are credit card-enabled and fingerprint activated. They contain a wide variety of products, which is why they are not open during the school day – all the items do not follow the school snacking guidelines and it would violate the contract with the school's lunch provider.

Editor's note: These locking coolers are a hybrid of the micro market concept and a vending machine. According to the article, the fairly new market seems to be successful, despite not being open during the school day. This may be the beginning of seeing these hybrid markets placed more frequently in public areas.
