The U.S. House of Representatives voted 306-117 to pass a federal law that requires food distributors to label products that contain GMOs (genetically modified organisms), reports the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
The labeling bill moves forward to President Obama who has indicated that he will sign it.
The bill takes the place of a state labeling law that took effect in Vermont on July 1 and also pre-empts future state labeling laws, the source reports.
The bill allows companies several options for labeling, including adding text to a label stating it contains GMOs, putting a symbol (TBD) or using a digital link like a Q.R. code, The New York Times reports.
