Navajo Lawmakers Approve “Junk Food” Tax

The Navajo Nation Council voted 10 to 4 to place a 2 percent sales tax on items such as cookies, chips and soda sold on the tribe’s reservation, according to NBC News. If the “Healthy Dine Nation Act of 2014” is signed into law by the tribe’s president Ben Shelly, it will remain in effect until 2020. The revenue generated by the tax is proposed to go towards a community wellness fund. The legislation failed to pass earlier in 2014. Full article.
