EVA Report: Vending Market Growth Picks Up

Sept. 24, 2019

The vending industry is now delivering sustained revenue growth in 19 of the 22 European markets covered in the new report.

Brussels, 23 September 2019

The newly published report by the European Vending & Coffee Service Association (EVA) provides the latest in-depth look into the European vending and Office Coffee Service (OCS) industry and reveals the current and latest trends.

Overall, the report - based on 2018 data – reinforces the positive trend seen over the last few years that the vending market as a whole is growing, and that the growth is becoming stronger. Indeed, total annual revenue has risen an impressive 3.9% to €16.4 billion, while the machine fieldbase (number of machines) has grown 1.5% to 4.12 million.

The revenue growth in 19 markets is a significant increase from 13 markets only two years ago. And in the 3 markets not showing growth, the report reveals that the decline is now becoming marginal.

The report incorporates data over a ten-year period revealing information such as the vending turnover, fieldbase and sales volumes (vends) in the countries covered, as well as a detailed machine composition breakdown. For this new version of report, greater clarity has been provided around the included machine types and definitions, particularly with regard to OCS and traditional vending machines. The report also provides some insights into the key legislative trends which are impacting the industry such as recent single use plastics developments, ‘fiscalisation,’ sugar taxes, and increased regulation of vending in hospitals and schools.

Some other selected facts revealed by this latest report include:

·      In Europe, vending machines sell 95.5 million food and beverage items every day;

·       Hot beverage represents 79% of the total market in terms of the number of vends;

·       There are around 180 Europeans per vending machine (190 in 2017), but varies dramatically from 60 people/machine in the Netherlands to 1,865 in Turkey;

·       Over 80% of European machines are located in the workplace;

·       Poland & Czechia have seen the largest market increases – impressive fieldbase growths of 8.4% and 6.3% respectively;

·       Investment in premiumisation of hot drinks segment has allowed operators to sell products at higher prices in most markets;

·       Consolidation continues among operators in many countries, with a number of significant acquisitions in 2018.

·       The base of micro-markets is starting to develop in several countries, particularly in Sweden and Russia.

This is the 7th edition of the market report on the industry provided by the EVA, and consists of a European summary with an overview of 22 countries, as well as separate more detailed individual country market reports.

The EVA Members have free and full access to both the European Summary and the individual country profiles, and can request them directly via the EVA secretariat.
