Washington Governor Proposes Soda And Candy Tax

Dec. 19, 2012

In her proposed budget plan, Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire has suggested repealing the sales tax exemption on candy and gum as well as imposing a $.19 per ounce tax on carbonated beverages in order to pay for raises to state home-care workers. Brad Boswell of the Northwest Automatic Vending Association (NAVA) recently sent a letter to NAVA members informing them of the Governor's plan, but also reminding members that Gov. Gregoire's budget is not finalized. Governor-elect Jay Inslee promised not to increase taxes. The NAVA is monitoring the situation.
