Bottled water on campus has been banned at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. since 2009, but that has not stopped students from buying the bottles of Dasani water that were mistakenly put into one vending machine.

Bottled water bans are based on the belief that the bottles create unnecessary landfill waste since tap water is available. However, as the International Bottled Water Association points out in another news item in today’s VendingMarketWatch, the water bottles are 100 percent recyclable and recycling rates have doubled in the past five years. 10-06-11
