LAFAYETTE, Ind.(April 21, 2015) -- Copper Moon Coffee, the Indiana-based, family-owned coffee company, announced today it has partnered with Canadian coffee roaster Club Coffee to help introduce PurPod100™ pods - what are expected to be the world’s first, 100 percent compostable, fully certified single-serve beverage pod. The PurPod100™ pods will be compatible with most Keurig brewing systems that accept K-Cup® portion packs, including Keurig 2.0 brewers, and will be available to U.S. consumers in late 2015.

Club Coffee developed the pod from bio-based renewable resources, in conjunction with international experts and scientists at the University of Guelph. The company designed every part of the pod to be compostable, including the ring of the pod, which is made from coffee chaff (the outer layer of the coffee bean that is removed during the roasting process). Club Coffee is currently undergoing a rigorous process required by municipal compost manufacturers in North America to receive certification for the product within a few months.

“The amount of used single-serve pods sent to landfills last year could have circled the earth 11 times,” said John Pigott, CEO of Club Coffee.  “That’s not acceptable. We have the most viable solution available to that issue – a pod that we expect to be certified as 100 percent compostable and that can be converted to useful compost.”

According to the U.S. Composting Council, many organic residuals and food scraps, such as coffee grounds, continue to be disposed of in landfills and incinerators, rather than being diverted to commercial compost manufacturing facilities, where they can be used as feedstock.  The alternative use of certified compostable products can help divert more food scraps to composting facilities and reduce contamination in the finished compost.

“Consumers are choosing single-serve coffee beverages due to their convenience, variety, and quality,” said Brad Gutwein, CEO of Copper Moon Coffee.   “Together with our partner, Club Coffee, we will soon be able to offer a 100% compostable, fully certified, single-serve coffee pod that not only tastes exceptional, but also helps contribute to the creation of healthy soil — and a sustainable solution to a growing environmental concern.”
