Sweetened Beverage Tax Fight Continues In Chicago, IL

Jan. 23, 2017

In response to Cook County's recent passage of the "Penny per Ounce" Sweetened Beverage Tax, NAMA has reached out to the County officials to request consideration for flexibility in the implementation and administration of the tax when it is scheduled to take effect. Jennifer Fox; Linda Furlano; Donny Anderson and Craig Hesch, along with Sheree Edwards, NAMA’s Legislative Director, are spearheading advocacy work to shape compliance requirements for the Cook County Sweetened Beverage Tax, going into effect July 1, 2017.

This Friday marks the second of two hearings on the issue; NAMA representatives and IAMC leaders are scheduled to attend.

According to a letter sent to the Cook County Department of Revenue and signed by nearly 40 NAMA member companies:   “We would ask that the Department complete an on-site visit to a vending operator company to better understand the issues, intricacies, and business practices of the vending industry and why the creation of reasonable flexibility options for remittance of the tax is needed. Lastly, we cannot overstate the tremendous challenge and financial burden of compliance with the proposed regulatory collection system and the need for flexibility for the vending industry.”
