Navy Exchange opens 24-hour micro market at Souda Bay

The self-checkout location addresses a gap in dining options for service members working overnight in Crete, Greece.

A Navy Exchange micro market at Naval Support Activity Souda Bay in Greece is giving personnel access to food and toiletries around the clock, including after dining services close at 7 p.m.

The fully automated market uses secure kiosks for self-checkout. It carries refrigerated items, microwavable meals, protein options, beverages and toiletries, according to the Department of War’s announcement.

The new micro market addresses a lack of substantial food options for night-shift personnel and watch standers, said Capt. Patrick O’Neill, commanding officer of NSA Souda Bay.

“Our mission is to support the warfighter, and you cannot have a mission-ready force without proper nutrition,” said Capt. Patrick O’Neill, commanding officer, NSA Souda Bay, in the release. “For a very long time, our night-shift personnel and watch standers did not have any substantial food options after 7 p.m.”

Jennifer Sullivans, NEX general manager, said the market was developed with the installation in response to community feedback.

The market opened following a ribbon-cutting ceremony that included the Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders, who were visiting the installation as part of an Armed Forces Entertainment tour. The cheerleaders also participated in a “Pre Pro Blitz” Flag Football Show later that day.
