With the opening of its 100th micro market on August 5 at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay near St. Marys, Ga., the Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) continues to expand round-the-clock food and convenience access for service members. The newest location — situated in unaccompanied housing that provides living quarters for single or unaccompanied Navy service members — serves more than 1,300 enlisted sailors. The micro market offers fresh meals, snacks, beverages and essential items in a self-service, self-checkout format.

NEXCOM installs its micro markets in high traffic Navy facilities with limited food options. Each micro market is tailored to local needs and includes sundries, cleaning supplies and personal care products in addition to fresh items such as yogurt, fruit and salads.

NEXCOM installed its first micro market in 2015. NEXCOM’s 100 micro markets are located in Navy hospitals, barracks, shipyards and even at-sea installations aboard the USS San Antonio and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.

What they are saying

“We get great feedback from customers when we open our NEX Micro Markets,” said Roanna Hatfield, senior services specialist at NEXCOM, in a DOD release about the micro market installation. “Customers appreciate having access to food, snacks and beverages conveniently located near them and accessible 24/7. To ensure we have the items our customers want to purchase, we tailor the assortment specifically to the location. Here in Kings Bay, that means it’s stocked with popular favorites and healthy grab-and-go options.”

“As a worldwide Navy command, NEXCOM is always in lockstep with the needs of the fleet,” said retired Rear Adm. Robert J. Bianchi, CEO of NEXCOM, in a DOD release about the micro market installation. “Our core mission is to enable warfighter readiness and enhance Navy quality of life for our men and women in uniform who are out there defending our freedom. In addition, our range of innovative and agile products and services are continually evolving, allowing us to support the Navy as it executes its mission around the globe.”
