The Davis City Council of Davis, CA, voted to consider placing a sugar-sweetened beverage tax on the June 2016 ballot for voters, according to The Sacramento Bee. The Council has until February to make their final decision; however, if the soda tax was placed on the ballot, it would need majority support from voters, the source reports. The city is considering the tax due to its need for additional money for public works projects and predicts that a beverage tax would bring in an estimated $800,000 to $1 million in the first year of implementation. The Council has asked city staff to conduct more research on ‘possible implications of the beverage tax.’ The proposed measure would add a penny-per-ounce tax on sugar-sweetened beverages.
