USDA Will Not Grant School Vending Waivers

March 21, 2014

The latest news from NAMA is that a waiver program for schools struggling to meet the new requirements of the Smart Snacks in School Standards, including the snacks in school vending, will not come to fruition.

According to the release, U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack testified that the USDA does not believe it has the power to implement a waiver program. This means that no waiver program will be provided to schools allowing them to delay compliance.

All food sold in schools will need to meet the new standards as of July 1, 2014.
