The Ethiopian government is planning to increase coffee exports by 45 percent in 2016, using incentives and enhancing farmer support, according to AFKInsider. In 2014 coffee made up nearly half of Ethiopia’s gross domestic product and the crop made up 80 percent of total employment in the country, the source reports. Despite the plan to increase coffee exports about 15 percent of the population will face food shortages in 2016 due to a severe drought.
