Royal Cup, Inc. Implements Leadership Succession Plan

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (May 21, 2014) – Royal Cup, Inc., an importer, roaster and distributor of premium and specialty coffees and teas, announced that it will implement its leadership succession plan on July 27, 2014. In accordance with the plan, Bill Smith III will succeed Hatton C. V. Smith as chief executive officer. Hatton Smith will continue to direct Royal Cup’s National Accounts and Food Service efforts, which represent the majority of the company’s revenue. 

“I am delighted to announce that Bill Smith III will be succeeding me as our president and CEO,” said Hatton Smith. “Bill has been with Royal Cup for more than 20 years and has held numerous key positions.”

Bill Smith III began his career at Royal Cup and has worked in many divisions including serving as a territory manager in Atlanta, overseeing the company’s Operations Departments and has also led the Commercial and Office Coffee Divisions, both of which have experienced strong growth for the company. Bill received his MBA from Goizueta Business School at Emory University and his Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies from Davidson College.

Royal Cup has experienced phenomenal growth under Hatton’s leadership. From 2000 to 2013, Royal Cup achieved a compound annual growth rate of almost 10 percent.

Royal Cup is a privately held, family-owned company that has been led by the Smith family since 1950 when William E. Smith acquired Batterton Coffee Company. Hatton Smith became the CEO in 1995, succeeding his brother, Bill Smith Jr., who now serves as the chairman of the board.
