The California State Senate has advanced Senate Bill 347, a bill that would require sealed sugar-sweetened beverages that have 75 or more calories per 12 fluid ounces to bear a safety warning, according to Los Angeles Times. The bill narrowly passed out of the Senate, and it proceeds to the Assembly.
Sen. Bill Monning, D-Carmel, who introduced the bill, said the beverages are the single-leading source of increased bad calories. The safety warning would read "STATE OF CALIFORNIA SAFETY WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) may contribute to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and tooth decay," according to the bill.
The warning would not be used for flavored milk drinks, dietary aides or infant formula, the bill stated.
The American Beverage Association has opposed the bill, the Los Angeles Times reported.
