Esther Cepeda, a syndicated columnist, claims in a recent column that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg doesn’t go far enough in his call for banning large size sugary beverages. To read the column at it appears in The Holland Sentinel in Holland, Mich., click here.
Editor’s Insight: This viewpoint is clearly in the minority, as the writer herself acknowledges. It is important to realize that people like this do exist and will try to impose their views on the rest of us.
Esther Cepeda views government mandates as the best way to teach her children good nutrition habits.
She claims having to choose from a variety of portion sizes undermines a person’s right to access “reasonable” portions. What she fails to recognize here is there is no consensus on what a “reasonable” portion is, hence the availability of different choices.
She claims “it’s really hard for even the most aware and disciplined consumer to make the best choices for themselves and their families.”
Really?
Her underlying assumption is that the human species lacks functional intelligence.
Hopefully, people who subscribe to such reasoning will remain in the minority. 06-07-12 By Elliot Maras
