Functional beverage makers Sprindrift, Jones Soda, Bloom and Brēz make moves

July 3, 2025
From gut-friendly sodas to mood-boosting tonics, functional beverages are making their mark in micro markets and vending machines. Gen Z’s demand for drinks with benefits is driving innovation, and brands are responding.

In response to Gen Z demand, functional beverages are gaining micro market and vending placements in workplaces, gyms, schools and campuses. Gen Z seeks beverages that do more, whether that relates to energy, hydration, immunity, gut health, focus or mood support.

Brands are responding, including new flavors and formulations from Spindrift, Bloom Nutrition and Brēz. At the same time, Jones Soda sold its cannabis beverage division yet reiterated its focus on functional and adult beverage growth. Read on to learn more about these launches, which reflect B&I consumer demand for a convergence of health, flavor innovation, and functional performance in beverages designed for convenience-driven lifestyles.

Spindrift adds Yuzu Mandarin

Expanding its sparkling water flavors, Spindrift Beverage Co. launched a Yuzu Mandarin flavor made from real, freshly squeezed fruit. The new flavor offers “bold bursts of tart flavor from yuzu and juicy, sweet notes from mandarins,” the company notes. It has teamed up with  Momofuku Noodle Bar in New York until August 8, offering guests complimentary cans of Spindrift Yuzu Mandarin to enjoy with limited-edition dishes designed to pair with the new flavor.

“Drifters always ask us to create custom batches of Spindrift special fruits — yuzu is one of the most-requested — so we’re thrilled to make this flavor available,” said Dave Burwick, CEO of Spindrift, in a release.

Jones Soda sells cannabis beverage business

Jones Soda Co. has sold its cannabis beverage business, including all related cannabis-specific assets under the Mary Jones brand, to MJ Reg Disrupters LLC, a privately held company. The transaction is part of Jones' previously announced strategy to streamline operations and focus on its core functional beverages offerings and the emerging adult beverage category, the company noted in a release when announcing the sale.

Not long after announcing the sale, Jones Soda reiterated its commitment to the adult beverages category. “Although we made the strategic decision to sell our marijuana-derived THC business, we are excited about the opportunity to increase our focus on and continue to expand our distribution of our Mary Jones HD9 products, which have been some of our fastest growing product categories,” stated Scott Harvey, Jones Soda’s president and CEO, in a release. “I believe the divestiture of our marijuana-derived THC business will enable us to sharpen our strategic priorities and accelerate investment in our core soda, functional beverage and adult beverage categories, including our hemp-infused THC segment.”

Bloom Nutrition adds Bloom Pop, a better-for-you soda

Functional beverages from Bloom Nutrition have continued to gain market share after a successful showing at Expo West 2025. Bloom Sparkling Energy, which debuted at the show in March, has sold more than 35 million cans in its first year, says  the company, and “become the highest-trialed energy drink on record according to Numerator.”

Bloom also debuted Bloom Pop, a better-for-you soda, at the show. Offered in five flavors — Shirley Temple, Classic Orange, Raspberry Lemonade, Strawberry Cream and Watermelon Lime — the sparkling beverage includes prebiotic PreticX to support gut health. Bloom Pop does not contain artificial sweeteners or ingredients; it contains 3 to 4 g of sugar and 20 calories in each can.

Bloom Pop will launch exclusively in all Walmart stores nationwide, with both Bloom Pop and Bloom Sparkling Energy featured prominently in their displays.

Brēz tonic lineup includes canna-infused and canna-free blends

Drink Brēz LLC launched four new functional beverages — two THC-infused and two non-infused — containing adaptogens, functional mushrooms and botanicals.

The functional beverage brand lineup includes Elevate, a caffeine-powered Strawberry Mango tonic with Lion’s Mane, nootropics, and adaptogens to support clarity, focus, and mental energy; Amplify, a THC- and CBD- infused Watermelon Lime tonic combining Lion’s Mane and adaptogens; Dream, a non-infused calming tonic with Cherry Chamomile flavor, formulated with mushrooms, adaptogens and botanicals; and Drift, a THC-infused tonic that blends cannabis, mushrooms and adaptogens with a Blueberry Lotus flavor.

Brēz offers its functional beverage lineup in Sprouts Farmers Markets nationwide.
