A major mid-Atlantic convenience store chain will soon accept bitcoin and other digital currency payments.
Altoona, PA-based Sheetz Inc. announced that it will use Flexa, described as a pure-digital payments network, to give patrons the ability to pay for items inside its stores with bitcoin, ether, litecoin and dogecoin, among other cryptocurrencies.
Sheetz said it will begin accepting digital currencies this summer at select stores; bitcoin acceptance at Sheetz's fuel pumps is planned for later in the year.
Sheetz currently operates 622 stores in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Maryland.
To enable Flexa's process for digital currency payments, Sheetz said it is leveraging its POS relationship with NCR, whose existing payment gateway can support the new payment option.
Flexa's instant and scalable solution is said to be climate neutral.
Separately, staring in the fall, vending machines will have cryptocurrency acceptance options on equipment featuring Cantaloupe devices. Cantaloupe Inc. is teaming up with Bakkt to enable crypto payments and loyalty points.
