Google announced that it is piloting a new payment app called “Hands Free” that lets users pay for items without reaching for their wallet or phone.
The Hands Free app uses Bluetooth low energy, Wi-Fi and location services on the user’s phone to detect if they are near a participating store. The user can then tell the cashier “I’ll pay with Google”, at which point the cashier will ask for the user’s initials and confirm identity by the picture added to the consumer’s Hands Free profile.
Google is inviting consumers in the South Bay San Francisco area to try Hands Free on Android and iOS devices at McDonald’s, Papa John’s and other local eateries.
The company reportedly announced the hands-free payment app idea back in May, according to TIME.
