French Researchers Expose Chip And Pin Credit Card Weakness To Hacks

Oct. 20, 2015

Amid the rollout of EMV cards in the U.S., French researchers have published findings about how a criminal gang was able to alter and then use stolen chip and pin credit cards, according to WIRED. The thieves embedded a second chip into a chip and pin card. This second chip allowed any pin to be entered, overwriting the original chip’s verification process of the correct pin. The gang spent $680,000 before being caught.

In response to the fraud, new verification processes have been added to certain readers, reports the source.
