Mars to close Newark hub as Chicago becomes home of North American snacking business
Mars is moving forward with plans to close its market hub in Newark, N.J., by December 2027 as part of a previously announced strategy to make Chicago the home of its Mars Snacking North America business.
Earlier this month, a New Jersey Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing stated that Mars Wrigley Confectionery US LLC expects to eliminate 307 positions at its Newark location, effective October 16, 2026. The filing follows Mars’ March announcement that it would invest $100 million and create more than 600 jobs as it adds its North America Region, Accelerator Division and Global Functions to its Chicago headquarters operations.
In a statement to VendingMarketWatch.com, Mars noted that the closure was part of planned office consolidation as the company relocates to Chicago.
“Following a comprehensive review of our Mars Snacking North American office footprint, we will be sunsetting the Newark Market Hub for Mars Snacking Associates by December 2027, consistent with our previously communicated move to Chicago. This decision is part of our broader strategy to position Mars Snacking for long-term growth and strengthen our operations in key locations across North America.
“We recognize the impact this will have on our Associates in Newark and are committed to supporting them through this transition, including providing relocation opportunities and support where appropriate.
“Mars has a rich history in New Jersey. We remain committed to the state and will continue to invest in our operations, including our ongoing innovation and manufacturing work in Hackettstown.
“We remain focused on serving our customers and consumers without disruption during this transition.”
The company did not specify which Newark functions are affected or whether customer-facing teams serving vending, micro markets, office coffee service, foodservice or other away-from-home channels will experience changes in sales support, category management or service.
