Alabama Legislature Blocks Birmingham’s Attempts To Raise Its Minimum Wage

Feb. 29, 2016

The Alabama Senate has approved a bill in a 23-11 vote that blocks Alabama cities from setting their own minimum wage, according to CBS News.  Alabama Governor Robert Bentley signed the bill into law shortly after the vote. The Birmingham, AL, City Council had previously passed an ordinance that would increase the city’s minimum wage to $10.10 on March 1; however, the bill’s passage voids the ordinance. Alabama currently uses the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
