National Restaurant Association To Challenge NYC Salt Labeling Rules

Dec. 3, 2015

The National Restaurant Association will file a lawsuit challenging New York City’s Department of Health over its requirement that chain restaurants of at least 15 stores must post warning icons next to menu items or combination meals containing 2,300 milligrams of sodium or more, the association wrote on its Website.

“With its sodium mandate, the Board of Health is not only inflicting financial burden on restaurants, but also imposing a view regarding the health effects of sodium intake that is the subject of scrutiny based on recent and evolving scientific research,” the NRA stated on its Website.

New York is the first city in the U.S. to require the sodium labels, NRN reports. Violators will face a $200 fine.
