San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee recently approved a measure from the City and County of San Francisco Board of Supervisors (Ordinance 150245) amending the Health Code to require advertisements for sugar-sweetened beverages to include a warning about the harmful effects of consuming the beverage.
“A number of additional legislative initiatives from across the county have proposed bans on or limits to the sale of soda and sugary drinks. It’s clear that these measures are aimed at fighting obesity and its ensuing health complications. We’ve seen a similar trend in schools. Recent statistics confirm non-alcoholic beverage industry giants like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are experiencing declining soda sales while seeing more growth in their non-carbonated beverage categories with products like sports drinks, ready-to-drink-tea, energy drinks and bottled water.
