On Thursday, May 3, 2012 Technivend held an education session to introduce the new USI ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) snack machine to customers at its Wilmington, Mass. location. Vending operators were able to see what the differences in the equipment are and the added enhancements that USI took the opportunity to add to their equipment, such as keeping the secondary card reader, while still within the ADA regulations.

Also shown was the available interactive touchscreen and how it can be used to adhere to the calorie disclosure ruling.

Editor’s Insight: The new side reach requirements under the Americans With Disabilities Act could prove to be a big problem for the vending industry. An educational session on the new rules during the recent National Automatic Merchandising Association OneShow in Las Vegas revealed the rules could make it difficult to remove or replace machines.

One aspect of the law that is clear, the speaker noted, is whether or not a vending machine that does not have a water line is considered a “fixed asset.” A machine with a water line is considered a fixed asset. What’s not clear is whether or not being plugged into an electrical outlet makes a machine a fixed asset.

The National Automatic Merchandising Association should seek a clarification of the law. Otherwise, vending operators could be facing penalties and lawsuits.
