New from Smile Beverage Werks, a Delaware public benefits corporation, is a compostable K-Cup style coffee pods for its own Smile Coffee Werks brand and private labels for retailers. The pods are compatible with the Keurig single-cup brewers office coffee service and home.
SBW said its compostable pod is “a whole lot more environmentally sustainable than traditional single-serve plastic and aluminum coffee pods.” They are commercially compostable, carbon neutral and made from renewable plant-based materials, SBW said. The pods also boast a 12-plus month shelf-life.
“It’s now super simple for any consumer or private-label brand to have a compostable pod and start being more environmentally sustainable,” said SBW cofounder Michael Sands.
SBW pods are launching in three flavors: High Country (a 100% Colombian RFA coffee), Werkday (a smooth single-origin, medium-roast coffee) and Woke Up (a 100% arabica bean producing a full-bodied dark roast). All coffee is sourced through farms that Rainforest Alliance certified.
Smile Beverage Werks' compostable pods do not require grounds to be cleaned or lids to be separated. They’re set to launch in 12-, 24- and 72-ct. cartons at SmileCoffeeWerks.com, Amazon.com and Walmart.com.
