Coffee Aroma Boots Cognition

Research suggest that the aroma of coffee is just as effective as drinking coffee, according to Coffee & Cocoa International

Research at Stevens Institute of Technology shows that the aroma of coffee helped students perform tasks better on analytical tests such as the GMAT exam. The research found that the aroma of coffee has the same effect as consuming coffee, which suggest a placebo effect of the scent of coffee. It also found that students tested in a room with coffee scent scored significantly higher than those who were in an unscented room. The results suggest that coffee’s aroma alone makes people more alert and energetic.

“Olfaction is one of our most powerful senses. Employers and others could use subtle aromas to help shape individuals’ experience of their environment. It’s an area of great interest and potential,” said Stevens School of Business professor Adriana Madzharov, who led the research.
