Oct. 9, 2019

Several Washington, D.C. Council members have given their support to The Healthy Beverages Choice Act of 2019, which would replace a 2 percent sales tax on sodas and sugary drinks that went into effect Oct. 1. with a 1.5 cents per ounce excise tax that would be charged to companies that make soda, NPR's WAMU 88.5 reports.

The tax would go to funding health and wellness programs in three city wards.
