WK Kellogg Co is expanding its school lineup with two single-serve cereals that meet federal nutrition standards, giving K-12 foodservice and vending operators new branded options for breakfast and à la carte sales.

The company is rolling out Kashi Strawberry Banana Loops and Kellogg’s Frosted Mini-Wheats Cocoa, both formulated and packaged for the K-12 environment. Families may recognize the cereals from retail shelves, but the new school formats are designed to align with U.S. Department of Agriculture Smart Snacks and school breakfast nutrition standards while fitting into existing meal and à la carte programs.

According to WK Kellogg Co, the single-serve offerings can be used as part of a reimbursable breakfast or sold as a convenient à la carte choice throughout the school day. That format, combined with Smart Snacks compliance, positions the cereals as vendable options for K-12 operators.

For the first time, the Kashi brand is entering the K-12 channel. Kashi Strawberry Banana Loops delivers 15g of whole grains per serving and is a good source of fiber. The cereal is vegan and Non-GMO Project Verified, made with a touch of fruit purée and colored with vegetable juice to balance taste and nutrition in a format that appeals to students.

Kellogg’s Frosted Mini-Wheats Cocoa is formulated as a good source of seven vitamins and minerals, including iron and folate, as well as fiber. The cereal combines whole grains with a chocolate flavor to appeal to children.

“These new offerings give kids a food they love and provide schools with a balanced option they can feel good about serving — all in service of our shared goal to help kids be their best,” said Sarah Ludmer, chief wellbeing and sustainable business officer at WK Kellogg Co., in a release. She noted that parents and schools are looking for foods that are nutritious, convenient and accessible, and that cereal and milk are often among the first meals kids can prepare themselves.

WK Kellogg Co said in its statement that the launches are part of its broader effort to support evolving health and wellness expectations among students, parents and school operators. By offering cereals that comply with federal standards, are familiar to students, and are flexible across breakfast, à la carte and vending occasions, the company aims to keep cereal a relevant, reliable component of balanced eating in schools.
