The Hartman Group's CEO Highlights Findings Of Report On Shopping Trends Among Lower-Income Households

July 8, 2019

SmartBrief included an article from Laurie Demeritt, CEO of The Hartman Group, that reports on a recent study from The Hartman Group.

The study found that low-income consumers don’t have the resources to search for promotions or buying in bulk and instead focus on limiting their food purchases and go to stores they're familiar with to get food they can afford. The study also found that these consumers buy cheaper and generic brands.

For traditional food retailers to make their promotions more appealing, they can offer savings on generic and store brands, make sure promotional pricing applies to smaller size items, and partner with a coupon app or develop a way to easily access coupons in-store.

Editor's Note: While this report specifically examines trends at grocery stores and through online shopping, the same trends may also apply to convenience services.
