A San Diego, Calif. vending operator has developed his own self checkout marketing. Adam Arthur, who operates Revolution Vending, a 3-route operation, explored some of the other self checkout systems on the market before deciding to build his own system less expensively.

Arthur noted he is a longtime software hobbyist. He spent several months developing his own software. He also designed the kiosk cabinet, which includes a bar code scanner, a bill validator and a credit card reader.
Dubbing his invention the “Greenbox Deli,” Arthur placed his first market five weeks ago and the second one two weeks ago. Both are new locations for his company, with 300 to 400 consumers on site, in enclosed (non-public) environments.

Arthur said he sources product from convenience store suppliers. He said the biggest challenge is educating customers about the markets.

He said he was not in office coffee service, but with the markets, he plans to expand into coffee service.

He said he did not intend to sell the system to other vending operators, but he is open to this opportunity.

He said he will develop a unit for public locations.  Such a unit will require security software and an exact-change dispenser.
