Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 213,000 in June, and the unemployment rate rose to 4.0 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Job growth occurred in professional and business services, manufacturing, and health care, while retail trade lost jobs. The unemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage point to 4.0 percent in June, and the number of unemployed persons increased by 499,000 to 6.6 million.
Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 213,000 in June and has grown by 2.4 million over the last 12 months.
The average workweek for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls was unchanged at 34.5 hours in June.
