Micro Market Legislation Becomes Law In Maryland

(CHICAGO) May 7, 2018 – Led by Steve Boucher, president of MD DC Vending Association and Regional Director of Canteen and Craig Kushner, president of Monumental Markets, in partnership with NAMA, micro market legislation has become law in the state of Maryland. Governor Larry Hogan signed HB 1087 – legislation establishing a uniform definition and licensing requirements for micro market operators across the state. 

As part of the process, both Boucher and Kushner provided testimony before the Maryland House Economic Matters Committee and Senate Finance Committee. 

“Like many industries, ours is rapidly evolving. To meet consumers’ needs for more innovative offerings, our member companies have introduced micro markets to deliver a more diverse product selection. Until this legislation became law, micro markets were undefined by Maryland law,” according to Boucher’s testimony. 

“We are pleased that this matter has moved quickly through the legislative process, and look forward to it taking effect October 1, 2018,” Boucher continued. 

“Due to the rapid growth of micro markets, NAMA’s strategic partner program is providing the resources for increased proactive efforts in states across the country to define micro markets, protect food safety and protect the industry,” said Eric Dell, Senior Vice President, NAMA. “To address this, NAMA has developed ‘model legislation’ based on the positive work the association completed with the Conference for Food Protection in the creation of its unattended retail guidance document. NAMA is moving forward to replicate this micro market legislation throughout the country in 2018 and beyond,” Dell concluded.
