(CHICAGO) May 27, 2016 – NAMA announced today that it has partnered with Operation Homefront, a national nonprofit supporting military families, for NAMA’s upcoming DC Fly-In. This partnership provides an opportunity for members across the convenience services industry to give back and deliver relief to military families in a meaningful way.
Operation Homefront’s Back-To-School Brigade (BTSB) provides military children with school supply-filled backpacks, helping relieve families of this growing cost, enabling them to use their income for other household expenses. According to Operation Homefront, as more and more schools ask parents to contribute toward classroom materials, parents plan to spend 12 percent more on school supplies from the year before, over $100 per family.
“In the planning of the 2016 DC Fly-In we felt it was important to include a service aspect to the event,” said Eric Dell, NAMA SVP of Government Affairs. “The partnership with Operation Homefront will allow industry members to directly impact the lives of military children by purchasing backpacks, whether or not they personally attend the Fly-In. Backpacks purchased and donated by the industry will be filled at a later date with donated school supplies from other donors.”
“Operation Homefront is excited about the opportunity to partner with NAMA and we look forward to a backpack presentation during the DC Fly-In Dinner in July,” said Vivian Dietrich, Regional Director, Operation Homefront. “When combined with other childcare costs, military families face difficult choices about ensuring their children are well-supplied for school or putting food on the table. BTSB is a wonderful way to support these families and help military children thrive in school.”
“Participation in this program does not require that you be a fly-in attendee. We urge the entire industry to get involved and give back to military children by purchasing a backpack and have it delivered at the Fly-In. This small act by the industry can make a huge difference for our military families and their children,” said Jeff Smith, Government Affairs Committee Chair.
