Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney is expected to propose a three cents-per-ounce city soda tax this week, according to 6 ABC.
The source reports that City Hall says the tax would raise $400 million over a five year period, with the funds raised going to expanding universal pre-k, paying off debts to invest in parks and recreation centers, and providing money for community schools and the pension fund.
The Teamsters released a statement against the plan. Dan Grace, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 830 in Philadelphia said, “As we have twice in the past, Teamsters Local 830 will once again exhaust every resource available to us to defeat the new administration's proposed soda tax. We will again be joined in this fight by a broad coalition, including the beverage industry, small business owners, consumers, consumer advocates, the faith-based community and elected officials alike.”
