U.S. meat snack brand Chomps has launched a sustainability initiative with ocean cleanup nonprofit 4ocean to neutralize the environmental footprint of its plastic packaging. For every pound of plastic Chomps uses, the partnership pledges to remove an equal amount from marine and coastal ecosystems.
This move underscores a growing trend in the convenience services industry, where companies are taking measurable steps to address environmental concerns without restricting consumer accessibility.
The companies are introducing limited-edition bracelets made from recovered ocean plastic, offered as a gift with purchases over $50. Cleanup operations, run by 4ocean’s crews, target coastal zones and waterways that are most at risk of contributing to marine plastic pollution.
What they are saying
While the program does not eliminate plastic from Chomps’ operations, company leaders say it is a key step toward longer-term solutions.
“While we realize this isn’t going to immediately solve the problem, Chomps is committing resources and planning to do our part in improving the plastic pollution problem,” said Pete Maldonado, co-founder of Chomps, in a release. "We believe in transparency and accountability and will keep our community informed with ongoing updates on the pounds of plastic collected, along with imagery from cleanups on our website.”
