San Francisco Board Of Supervisors Pass Legislation To Ban "Junk Food" From Vending Machines On City Property

May 13, 2016

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted 10-1 and passed legislation on Tuesday that bans sugary and fatty items from the approximately 150 vending machines on city property, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

The legislation was introduced by Supervisor Mark Farrell earlier this year. VendingMarketWatch.com previously reported that the legislation would require all items dispensed from vending machines on city property to contain less than 200 calories per serving and have no more than 240 milligrams of sodium per serving among other requirements.

According to the SFExaminer, however, the law does not impact existing contracts. Since the lease for vending machines at City Hall was recently renewed for another four years, traditional items can remain in the vending machines at that location until 2020, the source reports.

The city’s Department of Emergency Management is exempt from the new legislation and will be allowed to keep vending machines with standard products in their building.
