Legislation to ban ‘junk food’ in vending machines on city property in San Francisco, CA, advanced closer to approval on Wednesday, according to SFExaminer.com. The city’s 911 dispatchers, however, may be exempt from the law. Supervisor Mark Farrell amended the legislation to exempt the Department of Emergency Management from the requirement after a meeting with labor union SEIU 1021 which represents the department’s 911 emergency dispatch employees. According to the source, members of his staff said the workers would like to have continued access to energy drinks.
With the proposal, all other vending machines on city property would be required to dispense products that meet the mandated nutritional guidelines related to levels of sugar, sodium and fats.
