Coffee roaster F. Gaviña & Sons celebrates recycling milestone

Feb. 22, 2023
The company announced that over 2 million used coffee bags, pods and espresso capsules have been recycled through partnership with TerraCycle.

F. Gaviña & Sons Inc., makers of Don Francisco’s Coffee, Café La Llave, and a wide variety of other family-crafted coffees, is helping consumers meet their resolutions to recycle more. The brand announced that it has kept over 2 million used coffee bags, single-serve coffee pods and espresso capsules out of landfills through its free recycling program created in partnership with TerraCycle, a world leader in the collection and repurposing of complex waste streams.

Originally launched in April 2020, the Coffee Bag and Pod Free Recycling Program has successfully recycled enough coffee pods and capsules, that if placed one on top of the other, would reach the height of 172 Empire State Buildings.

"We've made great strides by recycling over 2 million coffee pods and bags, helping consumers take part in recycling and reducing waste in landfills," Lisette Gaviña Lopez, F. Gaviña & Sons’ fourth-generation coffee roaster, said in the announcement. “We are proud of this achievement and hope it serves to encourage more coffee consumers to make small but meaningful contributions towards a more sustainable future."

The Coffee Bag and Pod Free Recycling Program offers an easy way for consumers to set sustainable goals and recycle used coffee pods and capsules from two F. Gaviña & Sons, Inc. brands, Don Francisco's Coffee and Café La Llave, including:

  • Don Francisco's Coffee Family Reserve coffee bags.
  • Don Francisco's Coffee Family Reserve Single Serve Coffee Pods.
  • Don Francisco's Coffee Family Reserve Espresso Capsules.
  • Café La Llave Espresso Style Single Serve Coffee Pods.
  • Café La Llave Espresso Capsules.

Once collected, the packaging is cleaned, separated by material type, melted and remolded to make new recycled products while the residual coffee is sent to an industrial composting facility.

"Reaching this major recycling milestone reinforces the fact that consumers are eager to make the world, and the coffee industry, greener,” TerraCycle CEO and founder, Tom Szaky, added in the announcement. “With the Coffee Bag and Pod Free Recycling Program, coffee connoisseurs can set simple resolutions to recycle more single-serve pods and capsules and reduce the amount of trash sent to incinerators and landfills."

The Coffee Bag and Pod Free Recycling Program is open to any interested individual, school, office, or community organization.
