Dietary Guidelines For Americans Released, NAMA Applauds Position On Health Benefits Of Coffee Consumption

Jan. 8, 2016

(CHICAGO) – JANUARY 7, 2016 -- Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) jointly published the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (Dietary Guidelines).

The goal of the Dietary Guidelines, according to the USDA, is to promote health, prevent chronic disease and to help people reach and maintain a healthy weight.  Each edition, published every five years, provides evidence-based food and beverage recommendations for Americans ages 2 and older.

“The NAMA team is undertaking a careful review of the Dietary Guidelines released this morning. As an initial reaction, we share our whole-hearted support of the committee’s endorsement of coffee’s benefits, considering our industry’s role in serving millions of Americans coffee at the workplace and beyond, everyday,” said NAMA President and CEO, Carla Balakgie.

“Specifically, the committee found ‘strong evidence’ that moderate coffee consumption – three to five cups daily – is associated with a reduced risk of Type 2 Diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to the report, with a possible protective association for Parkinson’s disease risk,” she continued.

“For more than ten years, we have led our industry’s efforts to provide nutrition information directly to consumers through NAMA’s FitPick program,” she said.  “We take our commitment to help shape food and beverage choices very seriously and will continue our work with federal agencies to benefit our members and the consumers they serve.”

Founded in 1936, NAMA is the association representing the $25 billion U.S. vending and refreshment services industry.  With more than 1250 member companies – including many of the world’s most recognized brands – NAMA provides advocacy, education and research for its membership.
