June 1, 2017
A rust-resistant coffee variety called Centroamericano score 90 out of 100 points in the Cup of Excellence in Nicaragua, according to Communicaffe. The coffee took second place in the coffee competition and was grown by Gonzalo Adán Castillo Moreno at his farm in the Northern region of Neuva Segovia. Centroamericano is resistant to coffee leaf rust, a fungal disease that has devastated wide swaths of coffee production in Central America since an epidemic began in 2012.
