Bevi says its Smart Water Cooler beverage dispense systems have now displaced 1 billion single-use bottles and cans, marking a new milestone in the company’s push to reduce plastic packaging in commercial spaces.

Convenience services operators install the company’s connected beverage platform in workplaces and other shared environments, providing a convenient alternative to single-use products. Consumers have responded positively more than 1 billion times, choosing on-demand beverages over bottled and canned options.

“We didn’t set out to build a better water cooler; we set out to make the plastic bottle obsolete,” Bevi CEO Cathy Lewenberg said in the announcement, adding that the company views the milestone as proof that sustainability can be paired with convenience.

Bevi said its Internet of Things-enabled Smart Water Coolers provide customizable beverages and display bottles-saved metrics as people pour, giving organizations a way to track and share environmental impact in real time.

Co-founder Sean Grundy said Bevi systems often replace daily restocking of bottled seltzer and encourage employees to bring reusable bottles to work. He added that the company expects the environmental impact of those behavior changes to grow as Bevi expands.
