Bumble Bee Moves To Non-GMO Project Verified Tuna

Aug. 24, 2016

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Bumble Bee Seafoods, North America’s premium seafood company, announced today that its branded portfolio of canned Solid White Albacore Tuna in Water and in Oil is now Non-GMO Project Verified, with plans to certify the balance of its canned and pouch tuna products by the end of the year. The brand, which only uses wild caught tuna throughout its product line, has also moved to sea salt across all canned tuna products as part of the company’s ongoing innovation efforts to support “clean labeled” products that contain as few ingredients as possible.

“We take feedback from our consumers seriously and, over the years, we’ve had a lot of success by listening and responding to what people want when it comes to filling their family’s pantry,” said Dave Melbourne, Bumble Bee senior vice president, consumer marketing and corporate social responsibility. “We know shoppers today are looking for affordable and nutritious protein with clean ingredients free from genetic engineering. As the national brand leader in Solid White Albacore Tuna, certifying our Solid White Albacore line was the initial priority and we are targeting to have the balance of our canned and pouch tuna products Non-GMO Project Verified by the end of December.”

Cans of Bumble Bee Solid White Albacore Tuna in Water and in Oil will now carry the Non-GMO Project Verified logo and will begin moving onto store shelves as early as September 2016.

Melbourne said the brand is also responding to consumer interest for more information about where their food comes from and how it is made. Building upon Bumble Bee’s ongoing mission to provide healthy and nutritious meal solutions, the company is also committed to traceability. Last fall, the brand, which sources 100% of its tuna from wild caught fisheries, launched its Trace My Catch traceability website for tuna products, and the initiative has now been expanded to include salmon, sardines and clam products.

Consumers can visit BumbleBee.com/tracemycatch to track the path their Bumble Bee seafood product takes in order to get from the ocean to their plate by entering a code found on the can or pouch. The site educates consumers about their product, providing information such as where their fish was caught, the type of species, fishing method, processing location and more.

“Bumble Bee is committed to health and wellness and, as a leader in sustainability, we’ve made great inroads to ensure our products are sustainable and convenient for retailers and consumers,” said Melbourne. “Through product innovations and developing our traceability site, we can continue to provide quality products with complete transparency.”
