More U.S. Coffee Roasters Go Direct To Growers

More U.S. coffee roasters are seeking sources of high quality coffee direct from growers, according to an article in The Houston Chronicle in Houston, Texas.

Editor's Insight: It's unclear exactly how many coffee roasters are taking the initiative to source coffee directly form growers, but it's a good bet that more are doing this. Vending and coffee service operators who buy from roasters that source their own coffee have a great selling point.

Many vending and coffee service operators already distinguish themselves by offering private label coffee. Offering an exclusive coffee that is sourced directly from the grower makes an even stronger story.

Direct Trade is more supportive
Its not just one roaster. Unlike Fair Trade, which has often mixed reactions in the industry about whether it ultimately hurts or helps, Direct Trade has almost universally been seen as a positive for consumer, grower, and roaster/distributor.

Contracts Direct!
From a producer family in Guatemala, I would just like to agree with the comment that working direct, even if through a broker, is much more sustainable that certified Fair Trade coffees. Firs of all, farms cannot be certified, only coops and I dont think that consumers understand that. Secondly, Fair Trade does not assure quality and sustainability of life only a minimum payment for their coffee.
