Editor's Insight: Mobile advertising on cell phones is part of mobile commerce, also known as m-commerce, which is still in its infancy in the U.S., but many observers believe it will have a big impact on convenience retailing, including vending. There are many technology companies presently working to bring m-commerce to market.

Mobile commerce is much further ahead in some other countries.

This article notes that a professor at the conference noted that a retailer could place a bar code on its menu that the mobile phone would read to display more information or offer a promotion.

Surveys have shown that more than half of the U.S. cell phone users want to use their phones to pay for vending purchases.
