Broward County, Fla. school officials asked staff members to research a ban on energy drinks at all schools, just days after four Falcon Cove Middle School students were taken to the hospital after they drank energy drinks, according to The Sun Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Editor’s Insight: It’s surprising how little media attention has been given to the hospitalization that was reported last week. No one should assume that similar situations won’t occur.
Vending and coffee service operators need to pay careful attention. Energy drinks are rapidly growing in popularity, especially among young people, and the health ramifications have not been adequately addressed by the government.
Not all energy drinks are the same. The Florida incident was caused by a specific product, and it is not fair to implicate all energy drinks.
However, vending and coffee service operators must always err on the side of public safety.
Any product can be abused, and nothing can save consumers from their own bad judgment.
However, energy drinks are a relatively new product and it takes the government time to address health and safety issues.
