Detroit, Mich. Schools Investigate Aramark Food Service Contract

Detroit, Mich. public school officials are investigating Aramark's food service management contract, according to The Detroit Free Press. The district could be forced to pay penalties to the state if it is found to have used federal money that by law was not supposed to be paid to Aramark, said Barry Sackin, a consultant and former vice president of public policy for the School Nutrition Association in Alexandria, Va.

Aramark officials called the claims false, saying it has helped save DPS money and passed on some rebates after a new law was passed last year requiring it to do so.

"The claims reported in the Detroit Free Press are based on incorrect and incomplete information, and they are simply not true," Aramark spokesperson Kristine Grow said in a prepared statement. "Aramark has fully adhered to its contract obligations with Detroit Public Schools, and has delivered high-quality meals to Detroit's school children and savings to its taxpayers for more than six years. Student satisfaction and participation is up, even as overall enrollment in the city's schools is down."
